Wine Time – Do You Have A (Weight) Problem With That?

in Good Habits

Because I definitely do, and I’d hate to be all on my own.

Oh I do love a glass of wine, but all too often that glass of wine does not love me back.

Are you one of those people who find it hard just to have one glass, or even two?

I am, and I blame my genes of course.  Well, we can’t change the genes but we don’ have to be slaves to ‘em.

In my 20′s I certainly did my bit for drunken revelry.  Luckily I had sobered up and got a bit sensible by the time I had children.

Children and hangovers just don’t mix.  Alcoholism and parenthood is a tragic combination.

But I still love a glass of wine or three.

The Problem With Alcohol Is…

1. It makes me depressed, after a few evenings of a few glasses.

2. It makes me put on weight. It just does, of course it does.

3. You need to keep drinking more to get the same effect.

A Few Tricks I Employ

1.  Rarely have wine in the house, just like my favourite chocolates.  Would love to be able to resist but by now I know myself too well.

2. Drink fizzy drinks out of wine glasses… is that just sad?

3. Drive.  Enough said.

4. Try to get that ‘instant relax’ in other ways.  All ideas welcome!

Glass of red wine

Now ‘fess up. Is alcohol a health and weight loss/maintainence issue for you too?

Can you share your best ideas, cos I really need them.

Cheers!!

I’m linking up with Fitness Friday over at Kate Says Stuff. Kate’s in the midst of packing her house to move, lets all wish her luck, and strength and courage to deal with all that. Take it easy Kate!

Hey! I’m from SA, I must say I’m also trying to loose weight, I have joined the gym following a strict diet but I must say these days I so LOVE rum with appletizer and Amarula with milk and ice. Ohhh! The taste is NICE!

Post pregnancy, my ability to drink wine has diminished. 2-3 glasses and I’m done.

We do enjoy good red wine at home but by storing most of our ‘collection’ at our brother in laws house in Ballarat, we’re reasonably good at making it last.

And being on a stricter budget these days, we don’t splurge on it like we used to (although a $6 white wine from Aldi is surprisingly nice)

Oh this is fascinating, i don’t drink at all, so it’s just not part of my life, not since i was maybe 19, when i discovered alcohol didn’t mix with me well (difficult to metabolise) & i’d rather drive, much to the delight of my then boyfriend, now husband. My husband is away for what seems forever, he is lucky to have a few beers a week, he blames me – no one to drink with, so that works well, on the budget too. Hardly a lot of drinking going on in Afghanistan (like zero).
The amount of times a mum will look at my family (husband at war, 4 busy children) & say “have a glass of wine” i just look puzzled, surely i have to keep on my game regardless of whether i drink or not. I often get looks (at functions) like i’m a recovering alcoholic, WHY wouldn’t i drink, then i explain, people think i’m bonkers. Oh well, i don’t judge, but boy do i get judged!! Love Posie

I have blogged about how I was a big drinker in my youth. http://www.diminishinglucy.com/2010/10/lush.html

I have also blogged about my Mother and the fact that she is an alcoholic and the impacts of that on my are huge.

I am really really really lucky that I do not hear the call of wine.

Pringles and chocolate, however, are another issue…

I have no suggestions at all. I think wine is, like coffee and chocoate, a “feel good habit”. That offers little real reward. Instant gratification? Go for the delayed gratification of health instead?

Nice to discover your blog! This is an interestiby post for me as I don’t actually drink, just by choice. I used to find it hard socially but am used to it now. I hope you find a good system for you :)

I do like wine on occasion but it tends to give me an instant hangover :(

My dear friend Johnnie Walker on the other hand… Oh we go way back, and the coke that accompanies I am sure is even worse in terms of calorie consumption!

I was once a drunken reveller too, no time for that these days but I do love a drink or three with my friends now and again.

Same rule here too, if it isn’t in the house I cannot consume it!

Oh Kate, glad not to be alone with my little issue…. the ‘no wine, no choc’ at home in general works well. A drink when out with friends is good too. But imagine that I’ll always be keeping an eye on it all, just as I will always have to with over eating. First world problems.

I’m not a wine girl – I used to be a vodka and orange juice drinker when I first met my husband. Now I drink Amarula – but probably only once or twice a year. A knows if I decide to drink, I will drink a bottle in a sitting, not have a hangover the next day but then won’t drink again for 6-12 months !

I’m like you with chocolates – best not to have them in the house then I am not tempted.

Have a great weekend !

I love wine, I also enjoy cider (boutique brands) and beer (pale ale & amber ale).
Like everything else the French believe good quality alcoholic beverage has to be consumed in moderation and for pleasure (of the taste and flavours, not the pleasure of getting drunk!).
I drink only occasionnally mainly because I don’t have many opportunities to socialise with people around a bottle or two (do I sound desperate for friends right now?!).
Anyway, we open a bottle of wine at home sometimes, but limit ourselves to 1 or 2 glasses at most. Because you are right, it does make one put on weight, and it also does depress me at times!

Seana, depending on how you look at it, I’m really lucky or not. I’m actually allergic to alcohol so I don’t have the temptation of a wine luckily. Unfortunately sometimes it’s a bit challenging when you have to stick to water…. :)

Have a great weekend!

Thanks for your comments ladies. I’m afraid that the situation in Scotland is diametrically opposed to that in France. In Scotland it’s:
‘Eat any old rubbish, drink as much as is humanely possible!’ Oh dear! Even my Granny used to say that with alcohol; ‘It’s not the taste, it’s the sensation.”
When I lived in Italy for a year at 18, I was really amazed at how different the culture was: more fun, less booze.

Liz, I think you’re lucky in so many ways!

I love reading your comments! Thanks for leaving one and hope to see you again very soon!
